Fear of public speaking: a practical guide for leaders

Almost every senior leader has felt it: the racing heart before a board presentation, the blank mind at a conference. Here is what is happening, and what helps.

What is actually happening in your body

Public speaking triggers the same alarm system that protects you from danger. Your heart rate rises, breathing becomes shallow, hands and voice may shake, and the thinking part of the brain gets less access to your memory. This is not weakness. It is physiology, and it is trainable.

Why experience alone does not fix it

Many executives speak often and still dread it. Repetition without a method reinforces the same habits: speaking too fast, avoiding pauses, staring at the slides. Nerves fade when you change what the body does, not just how often you do it.

Six things that genuinely help

  1. Breathe out slowly. A longer exhale than inhale calms the body within a minute or two. Practise it before you walk on.
  2. Know your first sixty seconds by heart. The opening is when nerves peak. A rehearsed start gives you momentum.
  3. Slow down on purpose. Pauses feel long to you and natural to the audience. They also give your thinking time to catch up.
  4. Plant your feet and relax your shoulders. A stable stance sends a signal to your own nervous system as well as to the room.
  5. Speak to one person at a time. Finish a thought with one listener before moving to the next.
  6. Rehearse under realistic pressure. Practise standing, out loud, with a timer and ideally an audience, not silently in your head.

Common mistakes

  • Memorising the whole speech word for word, which makes a single slip feel like a disaster.
  • Trying to hide nervousness rather than working with it.
  • Adding more slides when what is missing is a clear message.

When to ask for more support

Coaching is a practical development tool. If anxiety is severe, affects your daily life or comes with panic symptoms, please also speak to a doctor or a mental-health professional. Elio works alongside such support and does not replace it.
